Understanding Your Spine: The Lumbar RegionNovember 6, 2018
Do you ever feel pain in your lower back and reach back to rub it, wondering what on earth you did?
You’re in good company. In fact, 80% of adultsYour lower spine is made up of the lumbar region. Because it’s part of your core, it supports most of your activities. In fact, it even supports you during times you think you’re inactive, such as sitting at the computer or on the couch.
Here’s more information about this important region!
What is the Lumbar Spine?
The lumbar region is comprised of the five vertebrae in the lower abdomen and hips. This part of your back is built for stability and power. Along with supporting your core, these bones allow your hips and legs to move.
It also protects your lower spinal cord, allowing nerve transmissions to flow uninterrupted between your brain and lower body.
The fact that so many of us spend time slouching and sitting on unsupportive furniture puts a lot of strain on this part of the spine. Getting regular chiropractic care helps prevent back pain in your low back.
When Your Lumbar Spine Isn’t Aligned
There are a lot of fairly minor events that can cause the lumbar vertebrae to be poorly aligned. This can put pressure on the spinal nerves and impact the ability of the spinal cord to send signals.
In addition, the nerves of the lumbar region are linked to your legs, feet, ankles, abdomen, and intestines.
Some of the problems you may have when your lower back isn’t right include:
- Low back pain
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Minor varicose veins
- Bladder problems
- Circulation problems
- Weak legs and ankles
- Cold feet
- Leg cramps
Regular visits to the chiropractor will keep your spine in order and help you avoid vertebrae-related pain and problems.
How to Know Your Lower Back Needs Care
If you’re struggling with tightness, stiffness, and low back pain, it’s important to get proper care. Chiropractic care can ensure that your spine is in alignment from top to bottom.
Problems with your digestion, numbness in your legs, or poor circulation can also be linked to your lower back. If these problems don’t clear up with chiropractic care, something more serious may be going on. Be sure to see your general doctor for additional help.
You don’t have to have a major car accident or other incident to throw your spine out of whack. Simply lifting something without proper technique or twisting in an odd way is enough to throw it out.
Be sure you support your back by staying active, stretching regularly through the day, and supporting your back when you sit on a sofa or other soft furniture.
