What Causes Migraines and Ways to Stop Them

If you have ever suffered from a migraine you understand just how debilitating they can be.

Unfortunately there are no cures for migraine sufferers. There is good news though. There are several things you can do at the onset of a migraine attack to reduce the symptoms, and even reduce the amount of attacks you receive.

Let’s start off with what causes a migraine to form in the first place, then cover five ways to reduce your migraine intensity and frequency.

Symptoms of a migraine include severe throbbing, or a painful feeling on the side of your head. Nausea and vomiting are common with a migraine as is a severe sensitivity to light and sound. Pain from a migraine can last for hours, or in extreme cases days. Blind spots, flashes of light, or even tingling on the side of your head or face can be early warning signs.

What causes the onset of a migraine?

Unfortunately, the cause of migraines has not yet been discovered. It is presumed that unusual activity in the brain is the cause.

Though the exact reasons are not clearly documented, the following can act as triggers. Hormonal changes, Emotional triggers, Physical causes like lack of sleep, Triggers in the diet, Some Medications, Triggers in the environment.


Without an actual cure treatment aims to prevent full attacks, and tries to reduce the symptoms.

Try some of these ideas to reduce the amount of attacks you suffer.

Get more sleep
Reduce your stress levels
Avoid drinking sugary drinks, and drink plenty of water
Get plenty of exercise

Ways to fight back the pain of a migraine attack

Have a glass of Grape Juice

Grapes act as a great pain reliever. Just drink a glass of natural grape juice. Avoid the processed grape flavored juice that most grocery stores will carry. You may want to create your own from organic grapes.

Use pressure points

Try massaging pressure points in your head at the very first sign of a migraine. It can relive some of the pressure building up before a migraine attack.

Chew a Ginger Root

Chewing natural ginger root has some impressive pain relieving effects.

Ginger root has been reported to affect how our body deals with pain and inflammation. It keeps our body from responding to a migraine, and helps with the nausea as well. You can chew a raw ginger root, or brew a cup of ginger tea.

Massage the Pain Away

You can help relieve the pain of a migraine with a massage at the base of your scalp, and neck. It stimulates blood flow and brings on relaxation.

Try using cold, or hot.

This is a tried and true method that has been around a long time, however, you may not have thought to use it on your migraine symptoms.

When you apply heat, your muscles will relax. This causes your pain to subside. If you apply cold, you will numb the area, lessening the pain felt.

It’s really up to you to try out both methods and decide for yourself which works best in your case.
