The Correct Way to Sit in an Office ChairJanuary 26, 2018
We’ve all heard it: sitting is the new smoking.
Sitting long hours at your desk every day can wreak havoc on even a healthy adult. So how do we combat the hours we spend at our desk focused on work? At Restoration Health we provide chiropractic care to patients seeking wellness for health problems caused by their day-to-day activities. Improving your daily habits can benefit your health in many ways, leading to a longer happier, healthier life.
The title of this blog is a little misleading. There is no correct way to sit in an office chair. In fact, every way you can sit in an office chair is bad for your health. The problem is in the stillness. The stillness of sitting cuts off circulation and slows down your metabolism. Even standing desks pose problems for your health in a variety of ways.
The best way to Combat Sitting is to Fidget.
Strike a power pose. Stretch that IT band. The goal of fidgeting is to activate movement in every inch of your body. It might feel a little silly, wiggling your legs, rolling your shoulders, or bending over to touch your toes, but, according to studies, the benefits could save your life.
Get a Standing Desk.
The correct way to sit at a desk is to not sit at all. Standing still isn’t a full solution to your desk situation. It’s an improvement. It will make it easier for you to move around every 10 to 15 minutes.
While not all of us are up to standing for eight hours a day, we might be more willing to stand up for short meetings.
Build Movement into your Life.
Take a moment to think of your daily routine. Are any of your stationary daily activities negotiable? Be reasonable. With some creative thinking, you can incorporate movement into your day without having to compromise on your to-do list.
