Neck pain is a common ailment that a large portion of the population reports at some time or another.
Getting professional treatment for neck pain is highly advisable if it persists or gets worse, as neck pain can become serious. It is, however, possible to work with your neck pain at home to help resolve some of the pain and discomfort. Use each of these tips to start reducing the neck pain that you experience.
1. Maintain proper posture.
A lot of neck pain is due to improper posture at your computer or dining table. Most people are quick to slouch or lean forward to stare at the screen. Remind yourself to constantly check and adjust your posture, and you should start to notice some of the neck pain resolving itself. You can also purchase a posture brace to help you learn how to hold your body properly.
2. Ice it.
Many causes for neck pain can be helped with ice. Ice the neck region on and off. It is advisable not to leave your ice pack on the skin for too long, as it could lose effectiveness and damage your skin and nerves. You should also make sure that the ice pack is wrapped in some form of towel to reduce the chance of damaging or sticking to your skin.
3. Change your pillow.
If your pillow does not support your head and neck properly, you will start to experience pain from the strain put on your neck. Your mattress also plays a big role, but the most important (and easiest to replace) thing is your pillow, where your neck rests at night. Find a pillow designed to support your head and neck properly, and you may find that your neck pain disappears.
4. Take a hot shower.
A hot shower focused on your neck and spine can help to relieve some of the tension in your muscles. You can also use a heating pad or hot compress for the same result.
5. Take a break from heavy activities.
Lifting heavy items and playing sports are just two examples of heavy activities that we put our bodies through. Taking a break from these activities can help reduce the neck pain that might be caused by or exacerbated by these high-impact activities. After your symptoms start to go away, resume your heavy gradually to avoid re-injuring yourself.
6. Give yourself a neck massage.
You don’t need to visit a professional to get a neck massage. Giving yourself a massage at home may not be as effective as seeing a professional, but it can still help to reduce pain on the spot. If possible, you can also ask your significant other for a neck massage. Follow these tips and you will likely be able to reduce the pain you are experiencing in your neck. Remember, if your pain persists or gets worse, pay a visit to your doctor to ensure any underlying issues are treated.
